Announcement for Users of
Word or PowerPoint 2007
for the Assignments Being Submitted
in my Courses at USF

Updated 12 Jan 2010

To convert your Office 2007 file (ending in .docx or .pptx) to a version compatible with the Macintosh Office 2004 or Office X software (.doc and .ppt), please go HERE for a downloadable software enhancement from Microsoft.

You can also use the directions below to convert to the older .doc and .ppt formats from within your Office 2007 program.

IMPORTANT: I will simply not accept a submission that I cannot read in my existing version of MS Word (Word 2004 for Macintosh -- .doc, .ppt, .xls). If you cannot produce such a version on your own computer, then you will need to find a different means of achieving this goal.

Here is additional information from one of my students who is using the new Office 2007 programs:

1. In the Office 2007 screen, go to the Office Button (icon in top left corner)

2. Choose SAVE AS command.

3. When given the option of different formats, choose "Word 97-2003 Document" (or “PowerPoint 97-2003 Presentation” if relevant).

4. The new file will be saved with the ".doc" or “.ppt” file extension and can now be opened in pre-2007 versions of MS Office.

On April 20, 2007 Microsoft published a new “compatibility pack” for users of Windows XP and other older software which supposedly allows easy opening of documents created in the new Office 2007 programs. Being a Macintosh user, I cannot pass along any advice about this software, but you can learn about it for yourself at THIS LINK.

For further information on Office 2007 compatibility issues, see this helpful page from the University of Wisconsin: http://kb.wisc.edu/page.php?id=5186

The article linked at the end of this sentence highlights problems with the Microsoft XML format in Office 2007 for those who wish to publish in the prestigious journals Science or Nature: http://education.zdnet.com/?p=1086.
